I want to treat today’s topic with a little more sensitivity, because I don’t want this to seem like a church-bashing session. So before I tell you why it’s been hard to be single in the church, let me give a few qualifications.

Second, churches do amazing things.   There are beautiful, generous, wise people in the congregations and on staff.  So I’m not trying to disparage churches in general; I’m only describing an experience that I believe lies in the blind spot of many churches.

1. Leadership wants to make women happy and fears holding women accountable. Men’s social goofs are punished, women’s sins are excused or minimized.

There’s this idea that the women outnumber the men. Ironically, according to the Census Bureau, there are more Christian single men who are marriage-minded than there are Christian single women. The challenge is how to find them. A study by the Barna Group shows that they’re not in the pews. They’re not in churches the way Christian single women are.

You mention that the church plays a role in being a woman’s network to find all these Christian men. How so? What is the church doing right or wrong?

What would help is if the church and the pastors would speak a unique message to never-married singles to say, “Most of you biblically really are called to marriage. We have a role as a body of believers to come around you and help you get there.”

The messages include everything from Graham’s famous Los Angeles crusade in 1949 to his comments at President Lyndon Johnson’s 1973 funeral to his sermons in Baltimore and New Orleans in 2006.

“Mr. Graham’s messages have inspired millions around the world and will continue to do so with the release of this audio library,” said Ken Barun, senior vice president of communications for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. “With more than 2 billion users on the Internet, his messages can now be accessed by many more for easy listening and sharing. Our ultimate goal is to continue Billy’s mission of using whatever means possible to spread the Gospel.”

I am especially grateful to have the opportunity to hear from pastors’ wives since much of my focus is on pastors. Our recent, informal survey simply asked the open-ended question: “What do you wish you had been told before you became a minister’s wife?”

Thank you to the pastors’ wives who were willing to give us such great feedback. And thanks to Chris Adams for doing the survey and to Amy Jordan for assembling the data.

One pastor’s wife told us that her role was like getting a job for which she never applied. She wrote this funny script in her response:

Several months ago, I wrote a post about pastors’ wives. The responses and comments were numerous and incredible. One of the greatest blessings about this blog for me is how much I learn from others. As I read the comments and the interactions, I came away with a greater appreciation for pastors’ wives, as well as a greater concern for these ladies.

I have attempted to summarize the primary issues the pastors’ wives discussed. I am sure I’ve missed something. For now, here are eleven things I learned from pastors’ wives.

So good, Thom. Especially #3. Can’t tell you how many times someone has invited my wife to lunch so they could tell her what she’s doing wrong in a role that has no job description or support!
